Dr Barbara Whelan
Acting Programme Manager

Dr Barbara Whelan is a Research Fellow with Evidence Synthesis Ireland, and currently is Acting Programme Manager. She is currently leading a review of the evidence support ecosystem for health policymaking in Ireland, with the aim of identifying strengths and priority gaps. This work supports decision-makers in accessing the types of evidence most relevant to the policy questions they face, when they need it.

She has previously worked with Evidence Synthesis Ireland on a COVID-19 related research project, providing senior researcher support to the Department of Health’s Expert Advisory Group on Rapid Testing. She has over fifteen years’ experience of conducting health research and has worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Ulster, Sheffield University, University of Limerick and University of Galway. Her previous work includes community-based research projects focused on public health promotion, including innovative initiatives to raise breastfeeding awareness through drama and financial incentives.
